Puppy Class

(pups up to 12 months of age)

Puppy classes are for dogs under 12 months of age.  Classes meet for one hour each week for six weeks.  These classes provide an effective way to socialise your new puppy to other dogs and people.  It is important to socialise your puppy at an early stage in his/her life as this helps to avoid undesirable fear and aggression behaviours as the dog matures.  You and your puppy will learn the basics, such as come, sit, stay, and off (get away from that). There will be discussion on house training and other basic issues that might crop up during your puppy's early months. This hands-on class includes socialising with unfamiliar humans, puppies, places and play-time activities, so be prepared for you and your family to get involved!

Topics include teaching your puppy the basic skills necessary to become a well-mannered puppy, how to establish who sets the rules (you), how to communicate with your puppy through voice, body language, and canine language cues. Class format consists of discussion, demonstration, practice of new skills, playtime with other people and pups, and games. This hands-on class will get you and your family engaged in the fun.

 Class information

YPD offers positive reinforcement training, and we ask that your puppy arrive with a plain buckle collar (no chain or choke collars, please). YPD's is dedicated to promoting the best possible experience for you and your puppy. Although families are strongly encouraged to participate, we request that the primary handler of the puppy be a parent or person over the age of 11 years. (Under special circumstances young people under the age of 11 might be allowed as the primary handler).
